The basic idea
Water follows the path of least resistance. Soil resists. Clean gravel barely resists at all. A french drain takes advantage of that by building a deliberate underground channel of gravel that is easier for water to move through than the surrounding dirt. Water in the soil migrates sideways into the gravel, falls to the perforated pipe at the bottom, and then travels along the pipe toward the low end of the trench.
That is the whole mechanism. There is no pump in a standard installation, no valve, no filter cartridge to change. It is gravity and a difference in permeability. When someone asks what is a french drain, the honest answer is that it is a controlled shortcut for water that is already moving in a direction you do not want.
Where the name came from
The name has nothing to do with France. Henry French was a Massachusetts farmer, lawyer, and judge who wrote about subsurface farm drainage in the 1850s. His book described building gravel-filled trenches to pull water out of saturated fields so crops would not drown. The technique got attached to his surname and stayed there. Modern versions swapped clay field tile for plastic pipe and added geotextile fabric, but the concept is unchanged from what French described.
Each part and why it matters
The slope
Slope is the part that makes the rest work. A french drain needs roughly one percent of fall at minimum, meaning about an inch of drop for every eight to ten feet of pipe. Without that, water sits in the pipe instead of running through it. Standing water inside the pipe lets suspended clay particles settle out and build up along the bottom, which slowly reduces capacity until flow stops. On a flat lot the slope has to be created by digging the upstream end shallower and the downstream end deeper, which is exactly why depth and outlet elevation are linked.
Washed gravel, not dirty gravel
The gravel around the pipe should be washed and reasonably uniform, usually somewhere in the three quarter inch to one and a half inch range. Washed means the crusher fines and dust have been rinsed off. Unwashed gravel arrives with a coating of powder that turns to sludge the first time it gets wet and then fills the spaces between the stones. Those spaces are the entire point. A trench packed with dirty gravel is closer to a trench packed with dirt.
Uniform stone size matters for the same reason. Mixed sizes nest together and reduce void space. You want stone that stacks awkwardly and leaves gaps.
The filter fabric
Geotextile fabric lines the trench and wraps the gravel so the surrounding soil cannot migrate into it. On Blackland Prairie clay this is not optional. Clay particles are tiny, and once they are suspended in moving water they travel easily. Without a fabric barrier they work their way into the gravel voids, then into the pipe, and the drain quietly silts up from the inside. The fabric goes around the gravel envelope, not just under it, and it should overlap generously at the top before backfill goes on.
The perforated pipe
The pipe sits at the bottom of the gravel and carries collected water along the trench. Perforations let water in along the length of the run. The outlet
This is the part people forget, and it is the single most common reason a french drain fails. A drain is a transportation system. If the collected water has nowhere to go, all you have built is an underground reservoir that fills up and stops accepting more. The outlet can daylight at a lower point on the lot, tie into a curb or alley discharge where local rules allow it, or terminate in a pop-up emitter in a low area. On a genuinely flat lot with no gravity option, a sump basin and pump becomes the answer, with the ongoing cost and maintenance that implies.
When comparing quotes, ask where the water goes. If nobody can answer that clearly, the design is not finished.
What a french drain fixes
- Groundwater saturating a low area of the yard after rain.
- Water moving downhill through soil toward a slab or crawlspace.
- A soggy strip along a fence line or between two houses where water collects and lingers.
- Hydrostatic pressure against a foundation wall, when installed at footing depth.
- Surface pooling, when the trench is topped with gravel or paired with catch basins so water can enter from above.
What a french drain does not fix
A downspout dumping thousands of gallons directly against a foundation is a roof water problem, not a soil water problem. Extend the downspout or tie it into solid pipe that carries it away. Feeding that concentrated flow straight into a french drain overwhelms a system designed for slow seepage.
A yard graded the wrong direction is also not a drainage pipe problem. If the ground slopes toward the house, water will keep arriving at the house. The fix is drainage correction and regrading, sometimes with a french drain added afterward to handle what remains. Burying pipe under a bad grade treats the symptom.
A french drain also will not fix a plumbing leak, an irrigation break, or a neighbor's discharge aimed at your lot. Those need to be identified first, because a drain sized for rainfall will not keep up with a continuous source.
Why this matters more on Blackland Prairie clay
On sandy soil, much of a rain event simply soaks in and keeps going down. Blackland Prairie clay does not behave that way. It absorbs water slowly at the surface and then effectively seals, so the rest of the rainfall has nowhere to go but sideways and across. The bigger issue is movement. Blackland clay is expansive. It swells when it takes on moisture and shrinks when it dries out, and that cycle is what moves slabs. Uneven moisture is worse than uniformly wet or uniformly dry soil, because one side of a foundation rises while the other settles. A yard that stays soaked on the north side and bakes dry on the south side is setting up exactly that differential.
